Which in one fell swoop negates half the point of the game existing in the first place. It all quickly becomes an unmanageable mess, forcing you to just give up and use physical controls for as much as possible. The problem is the awkward reliance on motion controls, that force you to hold the pad bolt upright, use the analogue sticks for movement, and often twist the pad around to take pictures at specific angles. The worst thing is that even the Camera Obscura element doesn’t work as well as you think it should, given the whole set-up appears custom made for the GamePad. And even if you do somehow miss the constant sign-posting the areas you have to explore at any given moment are usually always very small. The older games could be obscure almost to a fault, but here it’s made absolutely clear what you must do at every moment. The atmosphere is almost overwhelming at times and the closest any video game has come to mimicking the more slow-burning scares of a classic haunted house movie.Īll of this was true for Project Zero 2 (still the best of the series), but any hope that an 18-rated horror game would see Nintendo treat you like an adult are dashed once you have to start enduring the more than hour long pseudo-tutorial which has you trundling along doing exactly what the game tells you with absolutely no agency whatsoever – to the point where the camera will even turn you around and force you to go back and do what it wants. As is their want, the ghosts love to appear just when you least expect them and the game borrows every horror movie trick it can think of as candles flicker in a non-existent wind and ghostly hands suddenly grab at you from nowhere.
